Dear Friends of Birth Wise,
After pregnancy and birth, our bodies change. Some of these changes we can accept and celebrate. Our squishy bellies become happy pillows for the little ones. Our stretch marks are reminders of how amazing it was to hold and grow our babies for so many months. But today I want to talk about a change that should not be accepted: pelvic floor muscle weakness. These are the muscles that you used to push and give birth. They are the foundation for your hips and spine. If they’re weakened or out of balance it can lead to hip pain, sciatica, back pain, and more. They are a major player in sexual satisfaction and are responsible for helping you “hold it” until you find a restroom.
The weight of a pregnancy places stress on the pelvic floor muscles. They work hard during your pregnancy and even harder in labor. Additionally, some women tear while giving birth and the most commonly involved muscle is the major pelvic floor support muscle. This needs special attention to regain a pre-baby level of strength and support for your body.
If we do not work to heal these muscles, many women may experience stress incontinence or degrees of pelvic prolapse. This means leaking urine when you sneeze, cough, or laugh, and feeling like things are lower or pushed out. These symptoms will worsen with each baby or simply from gravity’s weight over time. But you do not have to accept any of this!
Our modern lifestyle does not facilitate body postures or physical labor that used to give women this strength back. In the modern age, we must make the decision to rehabilitate our bodies after pregnancy and birth. I am so excited to offer a series designed to do just that: “Your Pelvic Floor: Beyond Kegels”. Join me and reclaim your body! It takes dedication and some work, but you are worth it mama. You can do this. This course is safe for women who are currently pregnant too.
