So, you’re sick of being pregnant and want to know how to kickstart your labor naturally? These are 5 of our most used remedies for natural labor induction. Please consult with your healthcare provider prior to trying any of these methods as there may be medical contraindications.
Dr. Christopher’s Birth Prep is an herbal formulation in capsule form to be taken during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. While this isn’t instantly gratifying it can be a great way to avoid prolonged pregnancy.
Evening Primrose Oil (EPO), increases prostaglandin production in your body which helps to soften the cervix in preparation for an earlier and easier labor and birth. Beginning at week 36 take 500mg daily, increase to 1000mg in the 37th week, then to 1500mg in then 38th week, then to 2000mg until labor begins.
Blue Cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) and Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga Racemosa). Blue Cohosh is a uterine stimulating herb used in tincture form to regulate the contraction pattern. Do NOT take if your blood pressure is high. Black Cohosh works to initiate contractions. These are best taken in alternating doses in order to bring on contractions and regulate their pattern. These herbs can be taken up to 1 week prior to slowly initiate labor or can be taken more frequently for a faster induction. As always, talk to your healthcare provider prior to starting any herbs.
Cumin seed tea is a powerful uterine tonic used to induce labor. 1 tsp of comino/cumin seed to 1 cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes and drink 1 cup every couple of hours. Do not exceed 1 cup per hour.
Castor Oil. There are many horror and success stories about induction with castor oil. If you’re desperate enough castor oil can be a very effective labor inducer. While there are many recipes out there I love the old school, tried and true Orange Dreamsicle or Rootbeer float version.
Orange Dreamsicle: mix 2 oz of castor oil with 1 cup of orange juice and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, blend and drink. Repeat every 1-2 hours with a maximum of 3 doses until diarrhea, abdominal cramping, or labor begins.
Root beer Float: mix 2 oz of castor oil with 1 cup of root beer and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Mix well and drink up! Same guidelines as above.
Stay active: walking is a great way to keep labor going and to help baby move into the best position for birth.
Sex, sex, and more sex! Orgasm releases oxytocin, the hormone responsible for contractions.
Eat spicy and slippery foods like okra, eggplant, and oatmeal in addition to adding peppers and curries to your diet.
Laugh so hard you cry, or ugly cry. Both release endorphins and can be just the emotional release you need to allow your body to let go and get labor started.
