What is a Licensed Midwife?

A Licensed Midwife is a medical provider offering pregnancy, postpartum and birth services in accordance with the Texas Board of Midwifery. Midwives are experts in birth. Research shows that the care of a midwife decreases your risk of cesarean births, infection, and pre-term birth while increasing breastfeeding success, satisfaction with birth experience, and reduced post-partum complications.

I believe that building relationships with your providers has a positive impact on your health, wellness, and birth experience. I set aside at least 45 minutes for each appointment to address everything you and your partner need from clinical assessments to emotional and informational support. By really getting to know you, I’m able to support you during your labor and birth on an intimate, soulful level that gives you the space to step into your power in birth. Birth is a truly transformative experience where you will dig deep and possibly break through psychological & spiritual barriers to emerge on the other side with more than just a baby, but with the power, wisdom, and grounded knowing to take the leap into parenthood.

Erica Anderson licensed midwife in Austin

My Story

I was originally born in Flagstaff, Arizona. My mom is British and my father is 100% Finnish. We moved to Austin when I was three. I graduated from Texas State University with an Anthropology degree and soon after got married and had two beautiful children. This was my introduction to midwifery care and homebirth.

In 2008, I started training as a birth doula through Birth Arts International. Just after graduating in 2010, I soon started apprenticing with a homebirth midwife and enrolled in BAI's "Advanced Women's Herbal and Aromatherapy Course," "Postpartum Doula Training," and "Monitrice/Midwife's Assistant Certification."

In 2013, I was presented with the wonderful opportunity to apprentice as a homebirth midwife with Julia Bower, CNM and Laurie Fremgen, LM, CPM in their practice, HoneyDue Homebirth. After three intense and rewarding years, I became a licensed certified professional midwife. I enjoyed another three years owning a solo homebirth practice before I started to sail and travel the world, with a longer stay in France to get remarried.

I am returning to Austin and midwifery in 2024 and to continue my life’s purpose to provide compassionate, safe midwifery care to families wanting to give birth at home or at the hospital. I am grateful to follow in the footsteps of April Bullock, CPM, RN, FNP-C who started BirthWise and Brielle Epstein, CPM, LM who have guided the way and passed on a midwifery practice I can be proud of.
